Through the AmeriCorps VISTA program that Laura manages at Neighbors Building Neighborhoods, she was able to provide 72 VISTAs to assist with staffing programs who could not otherwise afford the help needed to succeed and serve the community. This served as invaluable help to organizations and programs whose budgets and resources were negatively affected by funding shortages. The VISTA members served at Muskogee Community Alumni Band/Band Pride, Community Treasures Youth Summer Camp, Dream Team Summer Learning Program, NBN Food Box Distribution Project, and Lake Area United Way’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Muskogee Teen Center/Youth Volunteer Corps, and Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. Without these individuals serving under Laura’s guidance, these programs would not have been able to afford the help they desperately needed. These VISTAs in turn receive an education award at the end of their term of service to help continue/fund their education with many choosing to stay local and attend Connors State College or Northeastern State University. These VISTA members are planting seeds of volunteerism early in their adult lives and many go onto continue serving their community in some capacity.
